Model 11 Practice Makes Perfect
Practice is the key to success in all fields of activity. It is practice alone which enables us to build up speed and efficiency. When we accomplish something perfectly without wasting effort, this is the result of long practice.
Take the study of English, for example. Only practice can enable us to spell words correctly and master the rules of grammar. And it is only through practice that we can become fluent in speaking and writing; there is no other way.
Another good example is sports. Practice is the only way to become stronger and run faster. Besides,in team games practice is what improves our sense of cooperation and helps the team to win. To sum up,there can be no achievement which is not based on a solid foundation of practice.
Model 12 Getting to Know the World Outside the Campus
It is important for students to get to know as much as possible about the world outside the campus. One reason is that knowledge without practical experience is like trying to walk on one leg. Activities outside the campus can keep a person s studies based on practical reality. Another reason is that maintaining contact with the world outside the campus helps the student become mature and responsible. There are many ways in which a student can get to know about the outside world. First, the mass media can keep the student up to date on political, cultural and sporting events,as well as the latest developments in science and technology. Second, voluntary social ser-vices,private teaching and surveys of factories or farms offer the student wide opportunities to get to now how ordinary people live.
Personally,I intend to study hard to give myself a good foundation for my future career. At the same time,I will take every opportunity to gain experience about the world beyond the campus by doing part-time jobs.
Model 13 Harmfulness of Fake Commodities
One negative aspect of China s rapid economic development is the phenomenon of fake and shoddy goods. In the hope of making quick profits, some unscrupulous people manufacture and sell substandard clothing, foodstuffs and medicines. This malpractice has caused alarm and concern among consumers, who are increasingly demanding that it be stamped out.
There is no denying that fake commodities do a lot of harm, not only to the normal development of the economy as a whole, but also, and more importantly, for the health of the general public. For example,in 1988 in Northwest China s Shanxi Province a peasant sold fake liquor, resulting in the deaths of 27 people. Looked at from a wider perspective, the social evil of counterfeit goods has the side effect of undermining the people s trust in the market economy.
It is high time to take firm steps to put an end to this unhealthy trend once and for all. First, the government should tighten the rules and regulations concerning the manufacture and sale of commodities
,and make sure that they are enforced. Second, consumers associations should educate people to recognize shoddy goods and report them promptly to the authorities.
Model 14Is the Hukou(户口)Policy Still Relevant in China?
The “hukou” system was introduced in the early years of New China to ensure that the populations of cities did not grow faster than the available resources of food, clothing and housing. Just as importantly,it also prevented China s cities from being swamped by mi-grants from the countryside seeking a better standard of living. But,the question now is,has it outlived its usefulness?
As the saying goes, time marches on,and China long ago solved the problem of providing its population with enough to eat and wear. Migrants from the countryside are no longer a strain on the cities resources. Moreover, the surplus workers in the rural areas are needed to swell the labor forces of the rapidly booming urban areas,at the same time taking pressure off scarce agricultural resources.
Therefore,it is my opinion that the hukou policy is no longer relevant. China s new market economy requires that labor be allowed to flow to wherever it is needed—be it city, town or village. However,it would be unwise to abolish the hukou system before an adequate supply of commodity housing is available to accommodate newcomers, otherwise, all the efforts of the past two decades may be undone.
Model 15 The Importance of Cooperation
Cooperation is important in a competitive society. While competing constantly for individual living space, people also cooperator to promote the development of society as a whole.
By cooperation, people can finish difficult tasks that seem impossible for any individual alone. For example,in modern industry, division of labor and mass production, based on combined efforts, have become common practices. It has been proved that cooperation not only leads to smooth work flow, but also low cost and high efficiency. Moreover, cooperation can improve the whole competitive ability of a group, and at the same time make each member feel stronger. Take a football team for example. Individual skills and teamwork are of equal importance for it. In a match,a team needs cooperation and organization to play at it best. On the other hand, good teamwork enables each player to exert his best, which in turn strengthens the performance of the whole team.As the saying goes,“Unite we stand; divide we fall.”
Without cooperation, people would have to do everything all by themselves, and the whole world would fall apart in the end. Therefore, in modern society cooperation is of great importance. People should learn to cooperate in order to compete well.
